Hazardous Substance Research Centers (HSRC) - A national organization that carries out an active program of basic and applied research, technology transfer, and training. Our activities are conducted regionally by five multi-university centers, which focus on different aspects of hazardous substance management. These centers bring together researchers from a variety of disciplines to collaborate on integrated research projects, which involve practical problems of hazardous substance management as well as long-term, exploratory research. The HSRC draws financial support from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Energy, and the Department of Defense, with additional funding from academia, industry, and other state and federal government agencies.

  • STAR (Science to Achieve Results) Program - The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to establish up to five (5) university-based Hazardous Substance Research Centers (HSRCs). Centers will be funded for up to five years. In this announcement, the EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) invites applications to establish HSRCs to address priority hazardous substance research and training, technology transfer, and technical assistance (referred to throughout this document as "outreach"). A total of $5 million, split in two parts: 70 percent for research, and 30 percent for other Center activities, including training, technology transfer, and technical assistance, is available for the first year. Awards will begin after October 1, 2000, and are subject to the availability of funds.

  • Land Resources and Environmental Science - The Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences (LRES) provides science-based teaching, research/creative activity, and outreach/public service. Our role and scope is to generate and disseminate objective, scientifically-based knowledge about land resources and land use. The Department brings together disciplines related to soil, plants, and water to achieve an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to understanding and managing landscapes. We focus on issues related to cropland, rangeland, other landscapes, and land rehabilitation. We foster collaboration with allied disciplines, institutions, and stakeholders, since land resource issues are complex and involve processes at many scales. We strive to synthesize knowledge into a comprehensive and useful summary for instructional, scientific, and practical uses.
  • Reclamation Research Unit - The Reclamation Research Unit is a multidisciplinary staff of research and teaching professionals committed to the reclamation and restoration of drastically disturbed or altered lands. The staff of the Reclamation Research Unit is dedicated to the development of techniques, methods, and procedures to address the repair of newly created minesoils and older damaged landscapes.
