igneous rock - (3) rock, such as granite or basalt, that
has solidified from a molten or partially molten state. (4) rock
formed by solidification of molten or partially molten magma.
infiltration - (3) the downward entry of water into the
soil or other material. (4) the entry of water into a porous substance.
See also leaching and percolation.
in-situ mining - (3) a method of extracting valuable minerals
from ore by remobilizing or leaching them from where they
occur in the ground. Under this process the ore deposit is drilled
with holes in a grid pattern, and a dissolving or leaching solution
is injected through the holes into the deposit, where the chemicals
extract the desired minerals. The pregnant solution is then
recovered at a different well or series of wells and is piped to
a recovery plant. There the minerals are recovered. The barren
solution is then returned to the injection wells and the cycle
begins again.
intermittent stream - (2) a stream or stretch of stream
which flows only at certain times of the year when it receives water
from springs, snow melt or storm runoff.
invertebrates - (3) animals without backbones or internal
bony skeletons.
