echolocation - (3) a process used by bats for locating distant
or invisible objects (prey) by detecting sound waves reflected back
from the objects.
ecology - (4) the study of relationships between organisms
and their environment. Ecological developments include the introduction,
growth and change in plant and animal inhabitants.
ecosystem - (3) a functioning unit of nature combining biotic
communities and the abiotic environments with which they interact.
(4) a community of organisms and their immediate physical, chemical
and biological environment.
effluent - (4) water discharged into the environment from
a man-made structure. For example, the drainage products of a water
treatment plant.
Eh - (4) an electronic potential which is measure of the
redox or oxidation/reduction potentials. Reported in units of millivolts
(mV) relative to the standard hydrogen electrode.
electrolysis - (4)a process in which an electric current
is passed through a solution containing high concentrations of dissolved
metals, causing the metals to be deposited on to a cathode.
electrowinning - (2) recovery of a metal from an ore or
solution by electrochemical processes.
emergent vegetation - (3) aquatic plant species that are
rooted in wetlands but extended above the water's surface. See also
submergent vegetation.
EPA - (2) United States Environmental Protection Agency.
erosion - (4) the detachment and subsequent removal of either
rock or surface material by wind, rain, wave action, freezing, thawing
and other processes.
erosion blanket - (3) material, such as straw, jute matting,
or rock that is applied to the surface to minimize erosion of soil
particles caused by the impact of raindrop splash and water flowing
over the surface.
euhedral - (4) term used to describe a crystal displaying
well-formed and regularly developed crystal faces.
evaporation - (4) the physical process by which a liquid
is changed into a gas. See also evapotranspiration.
evapotranspiration - (3) the combined process by which water
is transferred from the earth's surface (from soil, snow, water
bodies, vegetation ) to the atmosphere. (4) the loss of moisture
to the atmosphere due to evaporation and transpiration by
vegetation.
exotic species - (3) an animal or plant that has been introduced
from another continent. See also native species
