Revegetation
After all other reclamation activities have taken place, including:
(i) waste removal, treatment, and containment (ii) topographic reconstruction
and regrading, and (iii) topsoil covering, the site is ready for
revegetation activities. Establishment of vegetation is integral
in the reclamation process. Engineered water
control, hillslope erosion
control, and streambed and
bank erosion control measures are only designed to function
until vegetation is established, after which time, the trees, plants,
and shrubs provide for natural water and erosion control.
In general, revegetation includes the following steps: 1) selecting
appropriate plant species based on the chemical and physical properties
of the material in which the plants will be rooted; 2) preparing
seed bed including tillage, optional deep application of soil amendments
(lime and organic), and fertilization; 3) seeding/planting; 4) mulching
(organic material added to the soil surface to reduce erosion) and/or
chemical stabilization; and 5) fertilizing (addition of nutrients)
and maintenance. The following sections outline the different steps
in detail.
