Water Controls
Two of the major goals of any reclamation project are: (i) to prevent
the transport of contaminants off-site by runoff or groundwater
flow during and after reclamation, and (ii) to prevent water erosion
or flooding of engineered structures due to precipitation and runon
after reclamation has taken place. Water control structures protect
disturbed or reclaimed areas from erosion and contaminant transport
by: (i) constructing surface water controls to divert water around
the site, (ii) constructing infiltration control structures to prevent
infiltration of precipitation through engineered covers which can
cause groundwater contamination problems, and (iii) constructing
groundwater control structures to prevent contaminated groundwater
from being transported off-site. The following sections describe
each of the different types of water control structures in detail.
